Launch of Nike Free 5.0

Here it is, the new Nike product- Nike Free 5.0 feet strengthening footwear at retail! It was introduced yesterday with the launch of the Nike Run Club SG.

A brief introduction on the footwear

Nike first introduced the Nike Free shoe in 2005 with the concept of training barefoot to strengthen the feet and legs coupled with the protection and traction of a lightweight performance shoe.

Constant changes to the Nike Free shoe have been subtle yet significant to the performance of it. While Nike has been working on the evolution of Nike Free, the architecture of a natural motion out sole on the shoe has been adopted across a variety of performance footwear platforms including basketball, training, tennis and with traditional running products.

The new Nike Free 5.0 specific upper provides just enough support while still allowing the foot to move in a natural, dynamic and barefoot-like manner. Breathable mesh across most of the upper enhances comfort and ventilation while also providing a more barefoot-like fit and feel. Overlays are strategically-placed to balance the fit, durability and support of a shoe with the dynamic flexibility of the foot.

I wore the Nike Free Everyday to try it out for the run yesterday and I could actually feel that I am running barefoot. The weight is barely there yet it still keeps your feet well-balanced and steady while running. During the run, I tried running on pavements, cracks, up-slope and down-slope. The feeling was great for the pavements and cracks. I got a good grip and did not wobble on the cracks like my other trainings shoes but as for the up-slope, I must say, this shoe did little. Instead, I felt I had to drive more to run up the slope. Going down-slope, in typical cases, one's feet may actually experience friction and tight heat due to the fast acceleration when you are with and not against gravity. However, the Nike Free Everyday prevented me from feeling any friciton and simultaneously, allowed me to increase my speed according to my pace.

"Every good runner should know that the legs would bounce off as fast as it comes into contact with the ground." Craig said, during the Newton event. The Nike Free Everyday definitely allows you to keep your rhythm and land lightly on the ground before your legs leave the ground again. Also, I could feel an extra support for my mid-sole. Maybe it's just my own opinion, but it did feel better, more secure and thus, lightens your mood in running.

However, the Nike Free Everyday is only for training and should not be used in competitions.

Here is a brief concept of barefoot training

Running barefoot can strengthen one's feet and reduce risks of injury. Using Nike Free shoes helps athletes improve their performance. Everyone's foot and level of training is different. Nike Free 5.0 and Nike Free 3.0 are additional dimensions broadening access to the Nike Free benefits.

Barefoot strengthening can be measured on a scale of 1-10. First users to a Nike Free footwear should ideally begin training in a Nike Free closest to their standard running shoes and build their foot strength gradually to a flexibility and greater work for the foot. With minimal support, Nike Free 3.0 is the closest product to barefoot. Efforts are more demanding on your feet providing maximum strengthening.

In addition to the Nike Free 5.0, Nike will also launch the Nike Free 3.0 and the Nike Free Everyday this season. Both shoes will sit on the scale between the Nike Free 5.0 and the standard running shoe, which is 10.0 .

The Nike Free 5.0 and Nike Free 3.0 retails at S$149.00 each and the Nike Free Everyday retails at S$169.00 .
